Science and the management of water

Increasing demand for water is already straining resources in many parts of the world, a trend that is sure to persist into the 21st century, mostly as a result of urban demographic growth and rising standards of living. At the same time, human activities are causing the quality of water to deteriorate in many places, thereby reducing the quantity available for use without expensive treatment. The question this chapter asks and attempts to answer is whether there will be enough water to meet the needs of the world in the decades to come.
