This chapter focusses on four states that built themselves through immigration, the so-called “classic” or “traditional” countries of immigration (TCIs): Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States1. These TCIs continue to engage the world migration system actively, even aggressively, accounting for between 1.1 and 1.3 million legal permanent immigrant entries per year (see table 9.1.). That number increases by about 500,000 entries when longer-term temporary workers are taken into account and by as many as another 500,000 when net illegal entries are considered.
